This scatterplot data shows the number of players vs. the metascore (the rating of the game). There is not any correlation between the data as the data ranges from lots of players with either a positive or an average rating to no players with positive or average rating.

Keep in mind this data is for all games. It would be interesting to see if the data could broken down to the individual game level and see if there would be a better correlation with that data.
